Short Films - EURO Chat Transcript January 15, 2012

#Sriptchat Topic: EURO: Short films & USA Golden Globes

EURO talked all the intricacies of short films, from script to screen. Lots of great ideas bounced around. If you’re thinking about writing, producing and/or directing a short, this is a not-to-be-missed transcript. USA drank heavily with the Canadian #glush group as we made fun of enjoyed all that happened on The Golden Globes. No transcript of that one… what happens in #glush, stays in #glush. Enjoy! @jeannevb

January 15, 2012, 8:02 pm

@HateTheHate: #scriptchat ... never thought about writing a "short". Do they even have an audience or are they just expensive resumes/CVs? :S
January 15, 2012, 8:02 pm

@alli_and_that: First up - who has ever tried to write a short? How'd you find it? Would you consider writing a short film? #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:03 pm

@SiFoulaReel: @TaroJ 6'1. This might explain why I find them problematic. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:03 pm

@davidpalliser: #scriptchat re shorts. If you've written one but don't have the means to make it yourself, who looks for scripts to produce?
January 15, 2012, 8:03 pm

@HateTheHate: #scriptchat District 9 was based on a "short" ... hmmm.
January 15, 2012, 8:04 pm

@rosieclaverton: At LSF, speakers said there's no excuse for not having made a short film. Is that true? I can write, but I can't direct/produce. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:04 pm

@alli_and_that: @HateTheHate They do have an audience - festivals are a massive coup for strong short films. They're also great calling cards. #scriptchat

@Will_Scothern: I am extremely critical of short films, very easy to fuck up mainly because of lazy filmmakers. #scriptchat

@Marshallmedia: #scriptchat and as a producer I receive lots of scripts and ideas, the vast majority are poor. If you have a good idea you're 90% there.

@sianlawson: @SpockWriter I have an old friend who started out in exactly the same way @edgarwright #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:15 pm

@alli_and_that: The key to writing shorts is to keep the story simple. Don't try to cram a feature into ten minutes - aim for clarity of story. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:15 pm

@Will_Scothern: Main thing I find is that shorts work best as a slice of life, anything more involved and they fall apart quick. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:15 pm

@SpockWriter: @SiFoulaReel Wow! Now that's something I want to see! How difficult was it to make a feature with a zero budget? #scriptchat

January 15, 2012, 8:20 pm

@Sandy_Nicholson: @antonsays I guess to me I feel like sketches have a punchline and shorts have a theme. #scriptchat

@alli_and_that: Shorts with a tight script + high production value are often incredibly effective. Period short films are a staple of festivals. #scriptchat

January 15, 2012, 8:28 pm

@teenierussell: @SpockWriter yes, probably why I have so many lying around that don't have much value other than a writing exercise #scriptchat

January 15, 2012, 8:38 pm

@alli_and_that: @evaBS Definitely - shorts are the easiest they've ever been to make and to make well these days because equip is so accessible. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:38 pm

@SpockWriter: @teenierussell You could always use Twitter and other sites to find any directors/producers that want to make one of your shorts #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:39 pm

@alli_and_that: @grantmccall That's a great point - shorts should be made to be shorts. Make something bigger and better as a feature! #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:39 pm

@Will_Scothern: @alli_and_that @evaBS Of course, that leads to a lot of awful films being rushed by poorly trained crews... #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:40 pm

@TaroJ: @SpockWriter Ridley Scott's 1984 Apple ad, the PS3 one with projection mapping, even those old coffee ads with Anthony S Head #scriptchat

@sianlawson: @alli_and_that Some short stories have no ending - go on for a bit, then stop. I hate that but can be critically loved (Ballard) #scriptchat

@LewSwift: My script editor was a judge on some short script comps. I asked her for her #1 tip. She said a short is a short, not a sketch! #scriptchat

@grantmccall: For those who have made a short... what are some things that you seriously underestimated (during pre, prod and post)? #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:43 pm

@alli_and_that: @grantmccall There are always exceptions - use the short as a stepping stone to something bigger, not make the stone bigger. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:43 pm

@teenierussell: @scriptpunk @Spockwriter ...strong enough and I feel confident in getting made. That's this year's plan :-) #scriptchat

@rosieclaverton: Right, I love you all, but I need to get ready for #Sherlock. At least it doesn't clash with #scriptchat this week!
January 15, 2012, 8:45 pm

@alli_and_that: @Wehtam @grantmccall I'd suggest making better shorts whilst developing bigger projects on the side as a next step. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:46 pm

@LewSwift: @grantmccall - Try watching Lucas' short THX1138 and the feature version. Makes for interesting comparisons. #scriptchat

@Sandy_Nicholson: I recently watched a terrible film that was based on a short, I might seek out the short now and see what it's like. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:47 pm

@grantmccall: @Wehtam @alli_and_that There's no set path really. Some make one short then go to features, some continue to polish their skills #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:47 pm

@SpockWriter: @ScriptPunk@teenierrussell@taroJ do you all want to make a short this year or start to this year??? #scriptchat

January 15, 2012, 8:48 pm

@alli_and_that: @grantmccall @wehtam I think it depends on you as a filmmaker and how good your short REALLY is. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:48 pm

@LewSwift: I've learned a lot from making shorts. Not just the writing side but also the production, shooting and editing. #scriptchat

@teenierussell: Wehtam @alli_and_that @grantmccall Depends what your goal is, if feature, then go for it #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:50 pm

@alli_and_that: @LewSwift I think that's the other really great thing about shorts - making them teaches you so much about the process. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:50 pm

@ScriptPunk: @SpockWriter #scriptchat for me its about learning, finding collaborators and seeing differences between script and screen
January 15, 2012, 8:50 pm

@grantmccall: @alli_and_that @wehtam Good point - I wouldn't move to a feature until my short has got some serious accolades at festivals. #scriptchat

@antonsays: @alli_and_that #scriptchat what was your main motivation for making WALHFOF?
January 15, 2012, 8:52 pm

@LewSwift: @alli_and_that Definitely. With less running time you have to make sure you give the audience something to remember you by. #scriptchat

@luftschlosschen: @Will_Scothern that is so true! And also, they aren't afraid of missing anything essential for later on in the film #scriptchat

@alli_and_that: @antonsays I had so much fun writing the script so I asked an indie producer if he'd read it. He loved it so it gained momentum. #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:55 pm

@TaroJ: @alli_and_that one thing is that it's a lot of time, money, and favours so it has to be a story you are passionate about #scriptchat
January 15, 2012, 8:55 pm

@alli_and_that: @antonsays But for me, a lot of it was about getting back in touch with writing and directing. A fantastic exercise to do that. #scriptchat

@antonsays: #scriptchat am I the only one wearing shorts for this?
January 15, 2012, 8:56 pm
